Durgapur Chamber of Commerce & Industry - the organisation of businessmen in general and traders in particular at Benachity Bazar (Durgapur) was felt 45 years ago by a small businessman , Late Gajanand Sharma, a personality by name. The traders of various businesses, small scale industry owners engaged in printing press, small furniture makers and textile shop owners were consulted by him and after a meeting with them a traders association was registered in 1968 in the name of DURGAPUR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE. Sri Goswami Das Roy, an owner of a printing press was elected as the first President of the organisation and Sri Gajanand Sharma as Secretary. Along with growing up of Durgapur consisting of about 50 villages depending on cultivation to today's industrial city with the fulfilment of the dreams of the great person Dr. Bidhan Ch. Roy, this organisation developed itself from small seed to a big tree house with intake of members from the commercial houses, industries of private sector.
Serving all along for the last 45 years and solving various problems of government taxation, civic amenities like electricity, railways, telephone, municipal service, transport & health services and other business problems, participating in social work, organising training & awareness programme for the traders and businessmen have been the mission of the Chamber.Now, we have more than 800 members and with the support from the members and other sympathisers the Chamber made its own building for permanent office accommodation and auditorium. This Chamber is also associated with Bengal National Chamber of Commerce & Industry. In the past this Chamber took some useful steps in solution of various problems of the people of the locality, for example, placing of demand to Durgapur Notified Area Authority for supply of pure drinking water, saving people from dreadful power failures in the eighties by arranging supply of power from Durgapur Projects Limited and long term movement for establishment of 32 KV Power Station in Bhiringi etc. This Chamber collected relief fund for the victims of natural calamity like flood, earthquake, etc. for several times.
